James' Big Elk Hunt!

"September, fall's coming, I got a feeling and I can't control it...big bulls, big bucks, mountain roads and pick up trucks...hunting all day just to catch a glimpse of, big bulls big bucks..." - a few verses from Gabe Miller's song that James and the boys LOVE!
James was drawn a tag for one of the hardest units to get. He was beyond excited! Because we had just had the girls, he hired a guide from Mossback. He was not able to scout like he would need to to be successful because of the girls at home, so he would need help.
September came and I could see the nerves begin to take over...I assured him to just have fun and don't worry if you don't get an elk, this is an experience to enjoy! Well, the 5th day of the hunt, he called me in the morning to let me know the good news! He got his monster elk! I was so proud of him and elated for him!

James and his elk
Attached below is his account of his hunt from his Rutnhard.net forum account. It's a little long, but worth the read:

I just want to start out by saying 2011 has been a great year for me!!! I was blessed with twin girls in March, after having 3 boys Gavin, Jordan, and Ryan. Emily and Chloe were long overdue. I also managed to draw my first early Bull Tag in Arizona. My unit 10 tag caught me completely off guard after hunting elk in units like 6a, 5b, 4a, and 23 for 20 years; I figured it was time to try 9 or 10. With 7 bonus points I figured I wouldn’t get drawn for a few more years and would have time to learn these units. Well I was wrong. After finding out a dream come true, I quickly gave a few outfitters a call for several reasons: not knowing the unit, newborn twins, and commitment to coaching my boys’ baseball team, along with a few others. After talking to Jay Lopeman and a lot of referrals, I knew that team Mossback was the way to go. After getting rid of the stress of making sure I had the best odds of taking a mature Bull and not coming home empty handed, I began to focus on my archery skills. I consider myself to be an average shot, after months of practice I was able to build confidence and consistency beyond yards that I would not pull the trigger on a live animal. I guess you can say I was ready for the hunt.
Jay appointed Joe Gonzales to guide me on my hunt, after speaking with Joe, he invited me up 2 weeks before my hunt to check out some elk. We saw enough elk to make the hunt look promising in 2 days. We glassed and saw over 80 elk, around 8 bulls that were 330-350 with a nice 6x7 that would go mid 370’s that had harem of 20+ cows. The same afternoon before sunset a 380+ giant was seen on the move a long ways off with the kowas. After chomping at the bit for months I was happy to get some scouting in and see what unit 10 was all about.
The 8th of September came around not soon enough and we were loaded and on the road. I was accompanied by my uncle, Dennis Person, the best hunting buddy any guy could ever ask for, and long time family friend and hunting buddy, Mike Watts. The only person I was missing to share this experience with due to health issues would be my Grandfather James Person who gave me this addiction when I was 6 years old. After meeting up with Joe and heading to set up Dennis’ toy hauler at a campsite, we were invited to share with Ronnie and Aaron, AKA (Cowboy & Bravo). I couldn’t say enough about our elk camp, it was top notch with great company .The 9th came and it was time to get it done. The bulls were buggling 30 min before sunrise but would quickly stop about an hour after first buggle . Temperature was hot and rut activity was slow. We had set up calling several times after getting close to bulls they just weren’t fired up enough to come in. The morning of Day 4 we found ourselves chasing a gnarly sounding bull. If buggles were a tell all about size, he was a 440. After locating the cows Joe carefully glassed the area to locate all the eyes before we stalked in to find the bull. As some other hunters were closing in with cow calls, we decided to act fast. We moved quick and found ourselves with a golden shot at a 340 bull with awesome front end but rag horn back end. We videoed this bull then headed back to camp with a great encounter and high hopes for the afternoon.
The afternoon of day 4 found Joe and I playing cat and mouse with three bulls. Two of them we had close, 60 yards but unable to get a look, we moved on to the fourth bull who was the first fired up bull we found this hunt. After seeing this mid 370’s bull 100+ yards above his cows screaming his guts out and aggressively raking a tree Joe said let’s move. So we split the cows and had the giant bull at 50 yards. I drew back and was about to step out from behind a cedar for the shot when his 8 cows came running straight towards the bull to spook him out. I was baffled! We had a firm left to right wind, the bull was on my left and cows were on my right yet they ran towards me. We were able to get back on this bull and had him at around 50 yards again but day light had ran too thin for a respectable shot.
After raining all night the weather broke for the morning of day 5 and the bulls were going nuts. This is why September holds a special place in my heart and brings me to any elk hunt. Every September cow hunt, bull hunt, family, friend or friend of a friend’s hunt don’t care I’m all in. After moving in on a good sounding buggle we set up, Joe called this bull into range he was a mid 360’s bull but he was lopsided had a huge right side that would make him a 380 if matching, but the left side was a 340 type antler. We then moved towards the other bugles and one stuck out as it was a very deep growling sound. After setting up and calling in another bull that stood still in some thick cover with vitals showing for 3 plus minutes at 60 yards he was only a 330 type bull. In the mean time the growling buggle continues when we discover a group of 3 or 4 hunters moving in on the bull’s buggle. We then decided to keep moving in. After walking maybe 300 yards we discover a bull moving in front of us right to left, as I’m in the middle of knocking my arrow Joe whistles to stop the bull next thing I here is “shoot him, shoot him”. With no time to range I draw back then step out from a behind a tree to see the bull for the first time. With a surprising calm shot I figured my yardage at 55-60 yards. With my 50 yard pin placed inches above high lung I let it fly. Joe was spotting for the shot and said you nailed him, then after high five and seconds we heard the bull crash.
After a little celebrating we gather ourselves and give the bull time before we start to track it. Immediately we had good blood, but since it was muddy there was no problem just following the deep tracks from his distressed hoof prints. At this point I still have not seen the antlers of my bull; Joe had told me it was a good bull around 370 that’s all I had to go on. I know how weird that sounds but I know too many people that miss or make poor shots due to counting points before the shot.
As I walked up on my bull I saw a very nice 7x7 symmetrical rack, to say the least a very respectable archery bull. This was my third bull and my biggest yet, I was tremendously happy and humbled that we were able to get it done on this awesome bull.

I would like to thank Team Mossbacks Joe Gonzales who had me in elk every day we were out, his experience and skills are 2nd to none. This was a tough hunt and every one we spoke to had no luck and were seeing no elk. Also to my uncle, Dennis Person, and Mike Watts for being part of this memory, both who made sure I was eating right and getting rest with breakfast at 3am every morning, lunch and an elk camp dinner to die for. Ask Ronnie, he gained 10lbs. Also like to thank Ronnie and Aaron for sharing their camp spot and being awesome guys to hang out with and who I now consider friends. Last but not least my wonderful, beautiful wife, Amber Person, who lets me do what I love and supports my hunting tradition by taking care of our 5 kids and anything else while I’m gone every year.

MLB, here we come!!

It's been a while since my last post! Things around here have been a zoo!

Well, Gavin and Jordan were on the same coach pitch baseball team - The Twins.

Gav tearing up the field

They went on to the playoffs and did really well! I have to say that it was one of many proud mommy moments watching my little boys work together on the baseball field.

Jordan throwing the heat!

Gavin played shortstop and Jordan left field. Jordan would look to his brother for guidance and support. It melted my heart for sure. Both of their bats were hot this season, with a hit just about everytime they went up to bat! Gavin hit a few homers and triples, Jordan hit quite a few bombs as well!

The first hit of the season for Jordan was a very memorable one...
Jord, #10 is up to bat, the pitch is thrown, he swings, connects and WOW! It's a bomb to left field! Everyone goes crazy, except for Jordan. He stops, mouth wide open as his feet are planted to the ground as he watches the ball fly through the sky...about 5 seconds pass and then the coach yells, "RUN!" Jordan snaps out of it and books it to first base.
After the game, my mom asks him what happened when he hit the ball and he didn't run and he replies, "Nana! I was being Derek Jeter! When he hits a homerun, he stops to look at the ball before he runs." Haha!! What a character my Jordan is... Moments like these just fill my heart with joy!

<3 Brothers <3

Gavin played for the Rough Riders, on a kid pitch division which was so much fun watching him! He played shortstop, second base and pitched a few games. He made some awesome diving catches, great plays at SS and 2nd base and hit very well! James coached this team. I love seeing my boys play ball, it's the best... :)

Fun in The Summer Sun!

I wrote about the first day of school yesterday and I didn't write one thing about our summer adventures!

We did a lot of playing in our kiddie pool because it has been an oven out here. The boys just love, love, love being set free outside! They just run wild, as they should--they are rowdy boys! They go from "swimming" in the pool, to scooter riding, to bike riding to skateboarding and then the trampoline or "tramp" as they call it. It's a little inappropriate and makes me giggle everytime they say that because they don't know any better. Hee hee!

It's so amazing watching them from my window (in the cool AC) play together so nicely. It's like an alternate universe when they are playing outside, 9 times out of 10 they are so courteous and play togther without fighting. It's AWESOME!

The cutest thing is Ryan. He watches the older two so intently and then mimics everything they do. If Gav and Jord jump over a stick, he jumps, if they make a funny face, he makes a face. When they bike/scooter ride, it's always in a line: Gavin, Jordan then Ryan trying his hardest to keep up. Gavin is so good with Ryan, he turns around every few steps to make sure that Ryan is still following closely. He is such a great, nurturing and protective big brother!

I hope that they remember the fun times and many shananagans they got into here! I sure will. =-)

Waiting for our shuttle to go to Disneyland!

We also went on our annual family vacay to the Happiest Place on Earth -- Disneyland! The drive up there was not too bad. I packed a "car bag" with lots of new toys, coloring tools, books, and dvd's with was a hit. The girls were excellent, they slept just about the whole way there. Ryan's legs kept falling asleep and I know how weird that feels and sometimes hurts really bad. But considering it all, we did great!

Our room was really nice, I wasn't too comfortable with the humidity in the room though. Everything felt wet! YUCK! That really grossed me out.

The girls hanging out by the pool.
The first day at Disneyland was......well......STRESSFUL! We were not prepared at all, the boys were cranky, tired and overwhelmed. As were James and I. So, we just choose to wipe that day from our memory and move on. LOL

Ok, so fast forward to the second day at Disney. It was awesome! Ryan was much more manageable. We packed lighter and James and I had our game faces on and a plan. We had a game plan to get the most out of our day at the Happiest Place on Earth! Sorry, I just love to say that, ok one more time: The Happiest Place on Earth! Alright I'm done. We went on rides, saw Goofy, met Mickey Mouse and Ryan got a kiss on the cheek from Minnie Mouse. He was not expecting it, he was laying on the bench about to fall asleep and she walked by him, leaned over and kissed him. <3 What a memory. :-)
Ryan laying on the bench right before Minnie kissed him.

Day three we went to Disneyland and then California Adventure. I really wanted to go on the log ride but there was such a long wait. Maybe next time.

Ryan would only meet Mickey, no other characters.

We spent the day at the beach our last day in California. That was fun. The kids had a blast splashing in the waves and making sand castles. James went in the ocean and had fun in the waves too. I just put my feet in. I don't like oceans, well getting in them anyway. I received an email once about weird, ugly and scary fish that washed up on the shores of where a tsunami hit and those pictures stayed with me and I will never swim in the ocean again. *shivering

My boys playing at the beach!

All in all, we had a great time. I am so very proud of James and I for:
1. taking on the adventure of taking 5 children on a road trip
2. taking 5 children to Disneyland
3. taking 5 children to the beach
4.living to tell the story

Haha! Good times.

At California Adventure

One big happy family!

First Day of School!

Yay! Today was the first day of school. Gavin started this year as a 3rd grader and Jordan started as a Kindergartener!

They looked so handsome, both wearing dark colored "skinny" jeans and red shirts with new shoes. They had fresh hair cuts and looked pretty "sharp" as grandpa would say. LOL

Gavin waving at his friends

I had to give Gavin a kiss by the car because he wouldn't kiss me in front of his friends he said. He said that it was so embarrassing. OMGosh! I could have picked up the pieces of my heart from the floor when he said that! But I acted like I was cool with it and gave him a biiiiiig kiss by the car. I was like paparazzi, I took about 32 pictures on the walk from the car to the playground. Gavin was once again "embarrassed". Oh well! I'm your mother, I told him, it's my job to chronicle your life through pictures! He is so popular in school and it scares me! I wouldn't want him to be the "nerd" but I'm worried that being in the "in" crowd will get him into trouble later on. Well, all I can do is raise him right and hope that he will choose the right path. As soon as he got back on that playground it was as if he never left. All his friends surrounded him, welcomed him and they went on to play a kickball game. He said that his teacher is really nice and yelled twice today because there were some students acting up. I told him that they were just testing their boundaries to see what they can get away with, with this new teacher. I am so proud of my Gavin, he is such a polite, sweet boy. I'm a very lucky mama!
When James and I walked Jordan to his class he was so excited. He didn't want to play on the playground though, he wanted to wait by the classroom. He must have been aching to get into class and learn! Haha! He was so confident and ready. I was so proud of him for being so brave. I admit, I did get teary eyed when we left him there. My baby Jordan is so funny, such a charmer, loud, very smart and handsome! Leaving my boys at school for the first time is so bittersweet...
Jordan had quite an eventful day for the first day of Kinder! The first thing he told me when he jumped into the car at parent pick up was, "Mommy! 2 girls hugged me at lunch today!" OMGoodness! Those little hootchies! LOL just kidding. But seriously?! He had a grin from ear to ear. Oh Lord, I'm in trouble. I asked him if they were his girlfriends and he said they were just friends. I told him that he cannot have a girlfriend, but he can have friends that are girls. He asked me, "when I'm 18 can I have a girlfriend?", I liked that age so I agreed. Well, I asked Gavin if the girls were cute or funky looking and he said that they were really cute. Oh no!
I tested Jordan to see if he really paid attention in class or was just daydreaming about girls and he passed! Brains and charm?! He recited ALL of the 6 rules back to me like nothing. He said that his teacher was really nice. She seemed nice when I met her. I received a call tonight, from his teacher----UH OH! It was like I was in school all over again, the second she said, "Mrs. Person? This is Mrs. Teacher, and I am calling about Jordan..." my heart sank down to my feet. A million thoughts raced through my mind: was she calling about the inappropriateness of the hugs? Was he his MICROPHONE self again (loud)? Did he act up in class? NOPE! None of the above... she called to tell me that Jordan was so well behaved and she was really looking forward to teaching him this year. AH! *tear My Jojo is grown and such a good boy. "Well behaved" keeps replaying over and over again in my head. A Person boy, "well behaved"? What a great thing to hear about your son/daughter.
I work so hard to raise my boys right and am always thinking about what am I doing now that will affect what kind of a man they will become. And you know what? I think that we are doing a great job, not perfect, but great!

Emily Amber

Emily was born 2 minutes after Chloe. She was holding on for dear life when my doctor was pulling her out of my tummy. They said that it took about a minute to make her loosen her grip! LOL That's my girl, strong like her mama. The 2 minutes between Chloe and Emily seemed to be an hour. I was excited to see my baby girl. When they pulled her out and yelled, "It's a girl!" my heart filled with joy. She was a bit bigger than Chloe at 6 lbs 4 oz, pretty large for a twin. I'm so thankful that my girls were healthy and happy. I was so relieved to see them, I know I keep saying that but the worry that comes along with high risk mulitple pregnancy is immense.
The first thing I noticed about Emily is her precious little cowlick swirl where her hairline meets her forehead. This is how we distinguished the two at first. She was also a bit bigger than her sister. She has the chubbiest cheeks that are just so yummy!
Emily is the social one, she loves to talk her little heart out. Em never cries either. I am certainly so blessed. She gets so excited when underneath her mobile; she kicks her feet, grins from ear to ear and coo's nonstop. Her coo'ing melts my heart. Her face gets serious sometimes when coo'ing like she is really conversing with me. It's so awesome.
She is my little sleepy head. She likes to stay up with James and I just a little bit longer after her sister falls asleep. But then Emily falls asleep and it's all night, about 9 hours straight! Then, when she wakes up, she patiently waits, without crying until James or I get her out of her crib to lay in bed with us to nurse. Emily
She gets so excited when I ask her if she "wants chichi". She kicks her feet and coo's like crazy. One time, she got so excited that I swear she said, "OH YEAH!" after I asked her if she wanted chichi. My mom and sister were over at my house and we all busted up laughing in amazement.
She seems to always scoot over to her sister to cuddle, no matter how far away I put them in their crib they always find a way to cuddle with eachother. It is the most amazing thing ever to see them cuddle. When I look at my girls and see how beautiful, healthy, happy and perfect they are my heart melts and I am reminded about how blessed we are. I am anxious to see my girls grow, but am savoring every moment with my newborns as I know that this precious time cannot be taken back.

Chloe Jade

Chloe as she was pulled from mama!

Chloe was born at 4:01 pm on a beautiful Saturday in March. She was a tiny 5 lbs 13 oz and was even more beautiful than I imagined. It was so awesome to see Daddy hold his first little girl. He was so proud. Chloe is such a joy. She never cries, only when hungry or when she has had it with everyone holding her!
She loves her mama and loves her "tamale blanket" as we call it (swaddle blanket). Also, bedtime is a favorite of hers. She is usually the first one to fall asleep. Chloe is the first one up too. When put to bed they start out in their crib but when they wake up I nurse them in my bed where they will remain the rest of the night. Lately though, they sleep through the night well into the morning which I am so grateful for. As soon as I pick Chloe up from her crib, she gives me the biggest grin and starts coo'ing at me as to say "thank you mommy". When nursing her, she stops and whispers in her sweetest voice to me with a big smile from ear to ear then goes back to nursing. These are the most precious moments I have with her so far. Gosh, I love this girl.
She is the observer. She looks on with her big round blue eyes. But mommy can always get a smile out of her. She coo's a lot and I even got her to giggle out loud at exactly 3 months old just like her big brother Gavin. I bounced her on the bed and she belted out a huge belly laugh. It was priceless, I cried like a baby. She seems to be the more independent one. But who knows at this age? Chloe has a sweet demeanor about her. I am surely excited to see her grow into her own light.

"The Girls"...Emily Amber and Chloe Jade

Our first picture of the girls at 6 wks. This is when we found out we were having TWO!

2 days old
July 4th was the day that I found out that I had miscarried at 9 weeks. And you know, someone always has to say, "everything happens for a reason, this is God's plan..." Who would say that to a mother who just miscarried a baby? That statement really hurt and I cried for a couple of hours, wiped my tears and went on to loving my boys even more because I was thankful to have had them. Little did I know that God did have a plan, a plan times two ahead...
James and I decided to keep trying to conceive after the go ahead from my doctor. A whopping 6 weeks later we were pregnant! The OB performed an ultrasound to make sure that the baby looked healthy because of my previous miscarriage. As the ultrasound tech moved the camera along my tummy, I noticed 2 blinking little hearts. I shrugged it off thinking that there was maybe a reflection from the camera light.
UT: Um...guess what?
Me: What?! (I thought the worse...)
UT: You are having twins!!!
1 day old
Me: Shut up. (The color must have left my face)
UT: I wouldn't lie about something like that.
Me: WOW!

I turned to James who was in shock. Our eyes must have been popping out of our heads. We hadn't even considered a possibility of having twins. There were no sets of twins in our family and we did not have any sort of hormone treatments to conceive so it wasn't even a thought in our brains.
The UT went on to say that they were identical and they may be a super high risk type called "Monoamniotic - Monochorionic twins". That is when they share their amnions, chorions and placenta which only happens in about 1% of identical twins so it is very rare and high risk. Only about 50% survival rate. We would have to wait a few weeks for our next ultrasound to determine if they are "mono-mono" or not. If they saw a dividing line between the two then they were not. Needless to say that I did a lot of praying and hoping that my two little miracles were healthy and would live to delivery day.
Chloe on the left and Emily on the right
The day came when we were to find out the fate of our babies. My heart pounded as the UT looked for the membrane dividing my twins...just as I was losing faith, she belted out, "There it is!" "Whew, thank God." I said as I let out a sigh of relief. Turns out they were "Mono-Di" twins which means that they are monoamniotic diamniotic. Which is when they share the same placenta and have their own amniotic sacs. This is also a high risk type of twins but not as rare as the mono mono type. So, we were still not out of the woods yet but we had a higher success rate behind us.
The pregnancy went extremely well to everyone's surprise. I was very well taken care of. :) There were no complications or scares of any kind. My OB was so proud of me she always said.
Chloe on the left Emily on the right
The big question on everyone's mind was, was it 2 girls or 2 boys making our family a family of FIVE boys! I was hoping for girls but would be ecstatic at having 5 boys. I love my boys and love their fearlessness and adoration for their mommy. :) At my 16th week of being preggers, we found out that we were in fact having 2 beautiful little girls. I broke into tears, at that moment I knew that our family was complete. I was floating on a cloud. It was time to go shopping!! LOL
I made it to 36 weeks to the day which was just about full term for mono di twins. I was scheduled for a c-section at 36 weeks, 4 days.
Left: Emily, Right: Chloe
It was a Saturday, I had gotten up and had mustered up enough energy to make breakfast. I went all out, french toast, eggs, bacon, coffee and orange juice. We decided to take a trip to the store to buy new Wii games for the boys (which was quite a treat because they RARELY play that thing, I don't like it). I wobbled into my room to get dressed to leave. Then, my water broke! I yelled for James but he was outside so Jordan came running in to see what was wrong. He came in with wide eyes asking me how my water broke?
Jordan: WHAT broke? (looking at my stomach)
Me: my water, (trying to be calm) go and get daddy please.
Jordan: Did you fall? Did you break your bones?
Me: No honey, the babies are coming and you need to get daddy. (laughing)
Jordan: WHAT?! The babies are coming? From where?! (looking at the ceiling then the floor)
Me: (Ok I'm dying laughing now, you should have seen his face, he was seriously horrified) Sweetheart, just go get daddy please.
He ran off outside to get daddy...
Jordan: Daddy! Mommy's tummy broke!
James: Ok Jordan. (Shrugging it off because he was talking to our neighbor over the fence.)
Jordan: DADDY!! DADDY!!
James: (still ignoring him)
Jordan ran inside to tell me that Daddy was not listening to him. At this point I'm getting pissed because James is no where to be found. So I tell Gavin to tell Daddy that my water broke. I was able to explain it him a little better but he too was confused.

Jordan and Gavin holding Chloe
James ran in and he immediately called my MIL to come over and off we went to the hospital.
I was so excited to finally get to see my 2 little angel girls!
Proud Daddy with his girls!
When we arrived at the hospital, I told them what I had eaten just an hour and a half earlier. The nurses said that since I had eaten that I would have to wait 8 HOURS to have my surgery, WITHOUT DRUGS! WTH!? I was very disappointed and terrified but, what could I do? The girls were not having it. The contractions became more intense and closer together. I was given medicine to stop the contractions but it didn't work. I had epiderals with the boys so I had no idea how painful labor was. Kudos to those of you women who have babies without drugs! I couldn't handle it, and well didn't have to, they were delivered naturally. 6 hours pass and one of the nurses came in to check on me. I told her that I was in a lot of pain so she checked me and said, "OH MY! I feel a little foot or hand!" I was whisked off to the OR and prepped for surgery. I was freaking out because James had left an hour earlier to wrap up a job his employees were working at that day. We all thought that we had a few hours to go until he had to be back since surgery was scheduled later that day. So, he rushed back to the hospital and made it just in time.
Me ready for surgery!
As I entered the OR the bright white walls, shining lights and team of doctors was extremely frightening. I was scared, nervous and excited all at the same time. James was let in after I got my "epidural on steroids". He stroked my hair as the docs performed my c-section. I was so relieved and delighted when I saw "Twin A" who we named, Chloe. Her cry was too dang cute! I instantly fell in love with that little girl. Then 2 minutes later "Twin B" who we named, Emily was delivered. She did not want to come out of mommy's tummy! She held on for dear life the doctor said. :) James and I were so relieved that the girls were healthy, crying babies. I felt that immense love that a mother feels the second their baby is born, well, times two.

Ryry holding his baby sister for the first time!
